Default Gas Gauge

I am one of those who bought a Lance Vintage 150 through a secondary party and had it drop-shipped. While most everything about it was just fine I found that the gas gauge doesn't work. Is there a descending unit in the tank that I need to look at? Or has anyone seen a problem in the needle indicator?

By the way, while I have put very limited mileage on it over the past year, it zooms up to 50 mph with no difficulty, has no coughs, shakes or wiggles of any kind and has had neighboring Vespa owners (and there are many) wandering over to the garage to check it out and admire. They like it! And Vespa owners are notoriously clique-ish.

Any help on the gas gauge indicator and/or descending unit would be greatly appreciated.
