Affiliate Gateway

Affiliate GatewayThe Affiliate Gateway service that ScooterWiki provides is an extended feature of the True Link Exchange.  The service allows participating scooter websites to extend the content offering of their own website to include all that is available at ScooterWiki.  Users who are referred from these websites activate that website's affiliate codes for the Partnered Parts Suppliers during the users session at ScooterWiki.  If the user continues on to make a purchase from a partnered parts supplier, the referring website receives the commission.  This service is meant to maximize the profitability of the traffic websites receive that are looking for something that website doesn't offer.

How It Works

First, the client must register as a user at ScooterWiki, then notify the site administrator they wish to use the Affiliate Gateway.  You'll then be asked for your existing affiliate codes for all the current Partnered Parts Suppliers or if you aren't yet affiliated with one you'll be directed to sign-up.

The Partnered Parts Suppliers list their parts on wiki pages.  These wiki pages are available on the tabs "Parts" and "Upgrades" if available when viewing products in the Scooter Directory.  The part link that is generated will have the referring client's affiliate code appended to the link if the user viewing the link has been referred by a participating client.

Once at the Partnered Parts Supplier's website, if the user makes a purchase, the affiliate commission will be credited to the referring client as if they had linked directly to the part suppliers website instead of going through the Affiliate Gateway at ScooterWiki.

Referral Headers

The use of referral headers for affiliate tracking has it's limitations and drawbacks that clients need to be aware of.  For one thing, links can only be placed on your website with the registered domain (yourdomain.com).  Clients are not able to use the affiliate gateway by placing links in emails, alternate websites, or postings on other message boards etc.  Future developments might make this a possibility, but right now ScooterWiki can only use this method to track clients using the Affiliate Gateway.

Also, a small percentage of users will block their referral headers from being sent to ScooterWiki when they arrive on the site.  This is done both inadvertently and purposefully to avoid being 'tracked' and is done by either the user's software or the hardware connecting them to the Internet.  This means a small percentage of overall commissioned sales will not be credited to the referring client.  This is an unavoidable drawback to using referral headers as opposed to unique affiliate links.

ScooterWiki believes this small percentage of lost commissions is more than made up over the alternative because of the higher conversion rates that clients receive from using the Affiliate Gateway as opposed to simple links on their own website that point directly to the parts suppliers.
